This bottle originally contained a concoction of Bordeaux wine, Extract of Coca leaves, Brandy, and sweeteners.
Developed by Angelo Mariano, a chemist from Corsica, this came to market in 1863 in Europe. It was originally called “Vin tonique Mariani a la Coca de Perou”. The coca leaves came from Peru.
A 100 ml (3.38 oz) glass of the export version of this contained 25 mg of cocaine!
It is said that such notables as US Grant, novelist Emile Zola, John Phillip Souza and 2 Popes used this product.
Pope Leo XIII even presented Mariani a gold medallion from the Vatican as a gift. The Pope’s image was used in advertising for this product (with or without his blessing)!
This bottle has a small chip inside the lip which is shown in one of the pictures. It displays beautifully. The bottle is about 9” tall and is about 3 1/4” across the bottom. The bottle was produced in a three piece mold, so it has some significant age to it. The applied lip also attests to that.
